Swathi Thirunal Urmila Raja was born in Thiruvalla Nedumbrath palace on June 14th. She is the blessed daughter of Shri Kottakkal kovilakathu K.C Anujan Raja and Smt Nedumbrath Manorama Thampuratti. Ms.Uma Prabha Varma is her one and only elder sister.
She completed her school education from Infant Jesus Convent Thrissur & graduation from Sree Keralavarma College Thrissur. She learned VEENA for 7 years under Mr.Thrissur Venkidachala Bhagavathar, Bharathanatyam for 5 years from Thrissur Natana Nikethanam and Mohiniyattam from Thrissur Janardhanan master. She has conducted more than 500 programs across India and abroad. f the Her affection towards dancing and with an intention to impart the knowledge what she acquired from her masters inspired her to start a Dance academy named Mudra at Thrissur and for the past 10 years She had been running that. Mudra has given her the great pleasure of seeing these hundreds of shining stars in the field of Dance. Apart from this she has published CD’s and Cassettes of Cholkett, Padamanjari, Varnothsavam (Mohiniyattam), Nadodinritham, Bharathanatyam varnothsavam, Aathirathinkal (Thiruvathirakkali). She won the title of Miss Thrissur which was a turning point in her life. Further she served as a Malayalam teacher for 5 years at Surakshitha School in Thrissur.
She got married to Mr.Palakad Ankarath Ramanunni on 17-01-1981. Her daughter Uthara is one of the upcoming stars of Malayalam industry. The famous film actress Ms.Samyuktha Varma, wife to famous film star Mr. Biju Menon, is the daughter of her sister. Both Urmilaunni’s and Samyukthavarma’s families are living together under a single roof.
“Marattom” the first film of Ms.Urmila directed by Mr. Aravindan in 1988, won many awards in 5 international film festivals. Also her performance was appreciated by great critics like Deric Malcom, Chithananda Das Gupta. They commented that Mr.Aravindan had discovered and presented her talents for the Malayalam Film industry.
Sargam released in 1992 April was the film which made her popular in the film industry. Apart from films she acted in many tele-films and serials and mostly worked with the director Shajiyem. Nizhalukal, Nizhalattom, Mughamariyathrey, Kathayariyathey, DeviMahathmyam, Darussalam, Amruthavarshini, Neettivecha Madhuvidhu, Melottu Kozhiyunna Ilakal etc…are the major serials which she acted.
In 1994 she published the poetry “PANCHALIKA” and in 1995 a book named “Cinimayude Katha Cinimakatha” ( The story of cinema, a cinema story) a description on the technical aspects of cinema. Now it is a reference text at M.G. University. In 2001 she translated “The Book of Ganesha” to Malayalam, which was written by Royinagreval and named it “Ganapathy”. It is published by DC Books. She compiled her experiences and published it in 2006 as “Oru chimizhu manassu”
She learned “Kathakali” from Guru Sri.Balasubhramanyam and the debut was at Guruvayoor. She introduced “Mural” painting for the first time in Sarees and in dress materials. She conducted exhibition cum sales at Ernakulum, Dubai and Bangalore for the same. She conducted her painting exhibition, named “Ganapathy” at Ernakulum woodlands hall in 1997 with more than 50 pictures drawn by her in different medium.
She may be the one and only Malayalam actress who inaugurated more than 2000 functions and ventures. She is presently acting in various films and serials and also in commercials.
